If you are interested in becoming a member of Barclay Downs Swim & Racquet Club, please read through the questions and answers presented below for information and instructions. Please contact Mary Ellen McElroy, Membership Chairman, if you have additional questions.

Annual Enrollment begins in March and continues through the beginning of May.  This is the time frame in which we learn how many new members will be invited and process enrollment.  Unfortunately, due to fluctuations in resignations we are unable to predict how many memberships will be available or if a candidate is likely to get in.  If you are interested in learning your place on the wait list, please email the membership chairman in May after annual enrollment.  Your placement will not change until the annual Spring enrollment when applicants move up on the wait list.

How many new membership spaces does Barclay Downs Swim and Racquet Club (BDSRC) have available each year? 
The number of memberships available varies from year to year. It is based on how many members resign and how many members transfer into Senior Membership Status. To obtain Senior Membership Status, a member must be at least 65 years old and have been a member for at least 20 years.

When are new members admitted to the club?
New member invitations are extended at the end of March.  As members resign, we offer memberships to families on the wait list beginning with residents of Barclay Downs. Families from the non-resident wait list are then offered membership based on the date of their application.

How long is your wait list?
The current average wait for a non-resident is 6 years.  The current average wait for a resident is 1-3 years. Unfortunately, due to fluctuations in resignations, we are unable to predict how many memberships will be available each year or when a candidate is likely to get in.

How do I know if I am a resident?
Residents of Barclay Downs are defined by BDSRC’s bylaws. For details of the residential area, please refer to the Resident map.

How do I get on the wait list?
Please print either the Resident Application for Wait List or the Non-Resident Application for Wait List and mail it with a non-refundable $25 check to Mary Ellen McElroy, 3107 Wickersham Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211. Please make checks out to Barclay Downs Swim Club.

How much does it cost to join?
New members are required to pay a $25 application fee, $3,500 initiation fee, and $825 annual dues.

How much are the annual dues?
Annual dues are $825

How do I get an application for membership?
You will be notified by the Membership Chairman when a slot is available for you. At that time you will be directed to fill out the Barclay Downs Application for Membership. You will mail the application and the check to the Membership Chairman. The total due at that time is $4,325: $3,500 initiation fee and $825 annual dues.

What happens if my name comes up on the wait list and I am not able to join? Can I remain on the wait list?
Once you are invited to join the club, you have two options.  You can either accept the invitation and join, or you can not accept the invitation.  If you choose not to join for any reason when you are invited, you will have to reapply to the wait list if you wish to be on it.  You will pay the $25 application fee and be placed at the back of the wait list.

The wait list is long. How do I make sure I remain in my spot?
You MUST make sure if you change contact information (your email and phone number) that you contact the membership chairman, Mary Ellen McElroy barclay2812@gmail.com. If we don't have your current information and your name comes up, we cannot contact you to invite you. If your name comes up and you are not able to be reached, it is considered a decline. Declines are removed from the wait list and will need to reapply for the wait list.

What are the "things to know" about completing the application?
You will need two letters of recommendation from Barclay Downs members to submit along with your application for membership. These letters should be submitted via email to the Membership Chairman.

Can any current member sponsor or endorse me and my family?

I am a Senior Member. How do I get my Membership converted so that I am no longer paying dues?
A Senior Member is a member who is at least 65 years old and has been a member of BDSRC for at least 20 years. If you qualify for Senior Membership status, contact the Membership Chairman (barclay2812@gmail.com).

How do I resign my membership?
Please refer to the resignation letter.
